Mavericks Ate My Java

I recently installed the latest version of OS X called Mavericks.  I was looking forward to experiencing the latest features, the most advanced technologies, and the strongest security.

What I didn't expect is for Java to disappear - completely.

Strange turn of events that I don't recall being announced as part of the benefits of upgrading.

I found out when I fired up my Intellij Idea 12 and was presented with the following dialog box:

Indeed when I tried to run java -version from a terminal session I got a similar message:

Simple enough to click on the More Info... and follow the download instructions but why did Apple choose to remove Java?
